Kaunas Open Chess Championship Kauno taurė 2008
1. Introduction Kauno taurė (Kaunas Cup) chess festivals used to be very popular during 1984-1989, attracting many strong chess players, as well as amateurs to Kaunas. The Kauno taurė tradition has been revived last year with a modest 46 players line-up. KCF (Kaunas Chess Federation) aspires to move forward expanding the tournament and making it an international event.
2. Organisers Kaunas Championship is run under the auspices of Kaunas Chess Federation in cooperation with Kaunas Municipality Sports Department. The tournament will be carried out by Margiris and Trys nuliai chess clubs.

4. Timings Kauno taurė runs from 24.07 till 01.08.2008.
Opening ceremony – 24.07 at 2p.m.
Closing - 01.08 at 5p.m.

Blitz tournament
July 29 at 5p.m a 9 round blitz tournament is foreseen. An enrollment fee is 10 Lt.
The organiser has got the authority over slight timetable changes if the players have been notified in advance.
5.Venue Kaunas, A.Mickevičiaus str. 19, Karininkų ramovė. Karininkų ramovė is a splendid historical building in the city heart, built at the beginning of 20th century for military officers leisure time.
6. Time rate Swiss tournament, 9 rounds. The rate of play is 40 moves in 90 minutes plus 15 more minutes for all the remaining moves, with 30sec. per move increment from the start.
The FIDE Laws of Chess will be applied. „Kauno taurė“ is a FIDE-rated tournament.
7. Participants Local and foreign players may take part at the Championship.There are no age, sex or grade restrictions.
8. Entry fee
8.1 Entry is free for players holding the GM, IM, WGM or WIM title.
8.2 For players ELO rated 2300 and higher - 50Lt.
8.3 For players ELO rated lower than 2300 - 70Lt.
8.4 Players with no ELO -100lt.
The entry fee might be transferred to Kaunas Chess Federation bank account ( LT11 7044 0600 0319 0424; BIC: CBVI LT 2X ; SEB Bank AB, Gedimino av. 12, LT-01103 Vilnius) or paid cash at the tournament venue prior the start.
9. Registration.
The players may sign up to the tournament by e-mail (see contacts) untill 20th July. On arrival day the players are requested to confirm their part at the playing venue. Final confirmation takes place July 24th from 9p.m till 1a.m .Without final confirmal, the players might get excluded from the 1st round draw.
10.Accomodation
The organising committee doesn't bear any travel, accomodation or food expenses of participants. Few hotels in Kaunas are offered to participants:

If the players wish another location, price or service they shouldn‘t hesitate to address the tournament director as soon as possible, but not later than 20th June.
11. Prize fund and prize allocation The prize fund is 10000Lt (appr. 2900 euros)
I – 2500 Lt.
II – 1500 Lt.
III – 1000 Lt.
IV – 700 Lt.
V – 600 Lt.
VI – 500 Lt.
VII – 450 Lt.
VIII – 400 Lt.
IX – 350 Lt.
X – 300 Lt.
Category prizes:
Woman (girl) 500Lt.
Senior (born 1948 or older) 300Lt.
Military 300Lt.
At 2000 – 2200 rating band 400Lt.
Without ELO rating 200Lt.
The player may win only one prize (bigger one).If the players collect the same number of points, then the prizes are shared according to Hort system. The following criteria would determine the players‘ position in a case of a tie:
1) Median-Buchholz;
2) Buchholz;
3) progressive score;
4) drawing of lots.
The Championship winner is handed a trophy. There will also be the best Kaunas players awards.
12. Chief arbiter - Jonas Ridzvanavičius (national category). Deputy arbiters – Boris Gomberg (Israel), Algirdas Rauduvė and Valerijus Jegorovas (national category).
13.Various During the tournament the weather is expected to be fine, with temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius. The standard voltage in Lithuania is 220 Volts. The currency unit is the Lithuanian Litas (Lt). All major credit cards are welcome in the most of hotels, big shops and restaurants. The exchange rate (as of June 1st, 2008) is 1 Euro = 3,4528 Lt.
